Aromatherapy

We offer 6 free sessions of Aromatherapy to patients and their carers as part of the Centre’s holistic approach to care. All Aromatherapists are fully qualified members of a Professional Body.

What is aromatherapy? Aromatherapy at the Macmillan Cancer Centre

Aromatherapy uses the purest plant essence in the form of essential oils, which are extracts from various parts of plants, fruits, flowers, bark, roots or resin. Essential oils contain dozens of powerful complex natural chemicals that have beneficial properties. The selected essential oils are blended with a carrier massage oil which is then applied to the skin with traditional body massage.

It is suggested that absorption takes place in the blood stream, via the skin or by diffusion across the tiny air sacs in the lungs.

How can aromatherapy help?

The combination of massage and the therapeutic qualities of the essential oils (inhaled and absorbed through the skin) can sooth, revitalise, uplift the spirit, encourage positive thinking and possibly boost the immune system enabling the body to help itself.

Aromatherapy can:

  • · Induce a deep feeling of relaxation
  • · Relieve stress and tension
  • · Calms & soothe the mind
  • · Promote a sense of well-being
  • · Help to lift the mood and reduce feelings of depression
  • · Enhance lymphatic drainage
  • · Increase blood circulation increasing oxygen and nutrient supply to tissues
  • · Ease muscular aches & pains, digestive problems, anxiety and insomnia
  • How will aromatherapy make me feel?

During Aromatherapy you can feel relaxed, comfortable and supported physically and emotionally. On your first visit a medical case history will be taken and there will be a preliminary talk to make your treatment plan. Your therapist will ask you to lie or sit on a couch. If you are unable to lie down, you may be seated comfortably on a massage chair. The massage will be gentle and soothing. Treatment will last for up to an hour and you may feel tired and need to rest afterwards. We advise you to stay in the Centre until you feel ready to travel home.

How do I make an appointment?

Contact a member of our Centre staff or ring 020 3315 2386. Someone will then telephone you to make an appointment. Initially, you will be offered six free Aromatherapy sessions. If there are sessions available you may be able to continue treatment but a fee may be charged. If we are unable to offer you more sessions, we will refer you to therapists or centres in the local area.

What happens after I have had 6 sessions?

You will have a chat with our Complementary Therapies Co-ordinator who will discuss with you any benefits you may have had from the aromatherapy. If you would like to continue receiving aromatherapy, we can refer you to a local therapist for further sessions.

N.B. We would appreciate as much notice as possible when appointments are being cancelled (at least 24hrs).We understand this may be difficult, but it enables us to offer the appointment to someone else.
