Reflexology

We offer 6 free sessions of Reflexology to patients and their carers as part of the Centre’s holistic approach to care. All Reflexologists are fully qualified members of a Professional Body.Reflexology at the Macmillan Cancer Centre

What is reflexology?

First practiced thousands of years ago by the Egyptians, Chinese and Indians, reflexology is a natural touch therapy, practiced on the feet and hands. It is based on the idea that every part of the body is mirrored in the feet. By applying pressure to specific reflexes on the feet areas of imbalance will be identified to corresponding body areas and energy flow restored.

How can reflexology help?

Reflexology can soothe, revitalize, uplift the spirit, encourage positive thinking, boost the immune system and encourage self-healing.

Reflexology can:

  • · Induce a deep feeling of relaxation
  • · Relieve stress and tension
  • · Calms & soothe the mind
  • · Promote a sense of well-being
  • · Help to lift the mood and reduce feelings of depression
  • · Increase energy levels
  • · Help with headaches, fatigue, anxiety and insomnia
  • · Improve digestive problems e.g. constipation
  • · Aid pain & symptom relief
  • How will reflexology make me feel?

During Reflexology you can expect to feel relaxed, comfortable and supported physically and emotionally. You will be seated on a couch or in a chair and asked to remove your shoes and socks. Once your feet have been cleansed, the treatment starts with a gentle relaxation sequence. Occasionally you may feel some tenderness where the therapist is applying pressure to your feet, however, this is temporary. The Reflexology will be gentle and soothing. On your first visit a medical case history will be taken and there will be a preliminary talk to make your treatment plan. Treatment will last for up to an hour. You may feel tired afterwards. Your therapist will advise you to drink plenty of water. We advise you to stay in the Centre until you feel ready to travel home.

How do I make an appointment?

Contact a member of our Centre staff or ring 020 3315 2386. Someone will then telephone you to make an appointment. Initially, you will be offered six free Reflexology sessions. If, after your six sessions, we are unable to offer you more sessions, we will refer you to therapists or centres in the local area.

What happens after I have had 6 sessions?

You will have a chat with our Complementary Therapies Co-ordinator who will discuss with you any benefits you may have had from the reflexology. If you would like to continue receiving reflexology, we can refer you to a local therapist for further sessions.

N.B. We would appreciate as much notice as possible when appointments are being cancelled (at least 24hrs).We understand this may be difficult, but it enables us to offer the appointment to someone else.
